We return to St Peter’s Church, Harold Wood for our Spring 2016 concert. The programme will include Elgar – The Music Makers and Durufle Requiem.
Durufle completed this work in 1947 and dedicated it to the memory of his father. The setting we are performing tonight is for mezzo-soprano and Baritone soloists and full Organ accompaniment. We are delighted that James Davy has agreed to be the organist for the concert. James is Director of Music at Chelmsford Cathedral.
The work is set in nine movements. Like many requiems, Duruflé omits the Gradual and the Tract. The Dies irae, perhaps the most famous portion of the Requiem Mass is not set. Duruflé’s omission of this text and inclusion of others (Pie Jesu, Libera me, In Paradisum, from the burial service, mirroring Faure), makes the composition calmer and more meditative than some other settings.
Elgar completed The Music Makers by 1912. The words are from a poem by Alfred O’Shaughnessy for mezzo-soprano solo, chorus and organ. The words no doubt appealed to Elgar’s nature as it celebrates the dreaming artist who has to contend with the isolation of the creative artist. The work contains quotations from Elgar’s earlier works, particularly Enigma, Gerontius, Sea Pictures, both Symphonies and the Violin Concerto. Many of these themes will be familiar to you so do listen and see if you can pick them out.
