The Crucifixion by John Stainer
28th March 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Havering Singers will be giving a performance of John Stainer’s well-loved setting of The Crucifixion. In this work, Stainer has written some of the most memorable traditional hymn-tunes we shall ever hear and weaves music and words to make us pause in our busy lives and consider what happened during Holy Week.
Stainer’s aim in writing this work was a modest one: to provide an extended Passiontide meditation which ordinary choirs could perform and to which congregations could immediately relate. The work dates from 1887 which certainly means that the words are traditional. But sometime we need traditional words to describe the events of Holy Week which culminated in the death of Christ, on a wooden cross. The words of the soloists, the choir and the congregational hymns will make you think.
Perhaps the enduring popularity of The Crucifixion is the result of this blend of traditional and thought provoking words.
(There is no charge for coming to the performance but you may like to make a donation.)
